What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government-funded program that provides individualised support to people with permanent and significant disabilities, their families and carers.
It’s designed to help individuals access the services and resources they need to enhance their independence, engage with their community, and achieve their personal goals.
The NDIS has information on the support available in each state and territory of Australia and networks to community services such as schools, libraries, sports clubs, doctors, and support groups.
If you or a loved one has care needs, the NDIS can help fund essential supports such as:
- Personal care and daily living assistance
- Trained carers with extensive experience
- Therapeutic supports (e.g., physiotherapy, speech therapy)
- Assistive technology and mobility equipment
- Home modifications and support with accommodation

Eligible people, known as participants, are given a plan of support which is developed and tailored to their individual needs. A plan could include informal support that a person receives through family, friends, mainstream or other community services.
If required, the NDIS can also fund reasonable and necessary supports that help participants aged under 65 with the reasonable and necessary support they need to lead an ordinary life.
Not all people with disabilities will become NDIS participants. Only those who meet the access criteria become a participant and receive an individualised plan.
However, the NDIS can provide people with care needs, their families and carers support through information, linkages and capacity building by connecting people to the mainstream community.
The NDIS is a social insurance scheme, not a welfare system.

What Does the NDIS Pay for?
Understanding how you can use your NDIS funding while staying within the scheme’s guidelines can be confusing.
Many participants assume that their funding only covers equipment or direct support for daily tasks at home.
Essential services like personal care, meal preparation, and household chores are common inclusions, however your NDIS funding can support a much broader range of services tailored to your needs – you just have to know what the options are!
From community participation and skill development to wheelchairs, assistive technology and therapy services, your funding is designed to help you live more independently and achieve your personal goals.
A support can only be funded by the NDIS if it is related to your care needs and meets all of the NDIS funding criteria:
- Helps with your individual goals and aspirations
- Helps your social and/or economic participation
- Is value for money, meaning:
- The cost of the support is similar to/cheaper than alternative options that can provide you with the same outcome
- Buying the support will reduce the cost of funding for other supports in the long term
- Is effective and beneficial for you
- It helps to maintain your informal supports
- It is the responsibility of the NDIS to fund
Who is Eligible for NDIS?
The NDIS is available to
- Australian citizens
- Permanent residents and special-category visa holders who live in Australia
- Aged between seven and 65 years
- Have care needs due to a permanent impairment.
Based on the NDIS criteria, to be eligible for NDIS funding, you must either
- Need care-specific support from another person or special equipment to complete daily life activities, or
- Require support for your family to build their skills to help you.
- Require supports to either reduce your future needs, or
